History of the Property

The log house at 222 East Main Street is believed to be the oldest unaltered structure on Main Street. It is typical of the dwellings that were built by the Pennsylvania Germans. The earliest recorded deed is 1797 when Jacob and Anne Grove purchased farmland in western Derry Township.

Through years of renovations and remodels, this historic log house was finally restored to appear as it was originally intended. Many people have asked how the log house could survive. The answer is that the house was buried. The logs were covered by wood, asbestos, and, finally, carpeting. The floors were covered by newer wood flooring, and linoleum and the wood partitions were covered by more than eight layers of wallpaper. The restoration involved removing the later renovations to the old log house. These included Victorian wood trim, oak bookshelves used as a room divider, tin roofing, carpeting on the steps, and newer paneled doors. Stripped of these add-ons, the log house looks as it did originally.
